More and more Germans ready to use mobile payments

Almost one third of German consumers (31%) would use mobile payments if it meant they could do away with a purse or wallet completely, a survey by TNS Infratest for mobile payments provider Yapital has revealed.

Some 33% of the 1,002 consumers surveyed said they want to pay at a petrol station with their smartphone, 33% would like to buy their tickets for public transport using their smartphone and 30% see mobile payment systems as a “real alternative” for shopping at the supermarket or the drug store

Meanwhile, 48% expect paying with a smartphone to be secure before they decide to use it and 28% see it as a compelling argument for mobile payments if it proved to be faster than other payment methods. Just over half (52%) of respondents under the age of 30 also think it is important to be able to pay in all sales channels using a mobile payment system

“The results surpass our expectations,” says Yapital CEO Nils Winkler. “They attest to our opinion that the consumer indeed has problems with the available and established payment methods. They underpin our assumption that a mobile payment system can be successful if it functions cross-channel, on all sales channels and offers the consumer real additional values.”
